ArchCare, the continuing care community of the Archdiocese of New York, hired Scully Construction, LLC to manage the renovation of a long-vacant former convent on the grounds of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady Church in Tuckahoe, NY. The building renovation, now known as ArchCare’s St. Frances Cabrini Apartments, was designed to help address the critical lack of safe, affordable housing where people with high-functioning autism can live productive and fulfilling lives in the community.
The former convent building was built in the early 1900s and has been vacant for over a decade. The goal was to retain as much of the architectural integrity of the original building while bringing it in line with modern-day building codes and amenities for tenants with specific needs.
Project scope included complete demolition of interior rooms, upgrading all of the systems in the building (electrical, lighting, plumbing), and installing new systems (HVAC, fire protection, security), repairing the existing multi-gabled roof, and installing an elevator to service all three floors of the building. Each of the ten apartments has full bathroom and kitchen facilities, and there are several community rooms for residents. Stained glass windows are being retained and renewed, with modern windows added for comfort and efficiency.
The building’s connectivity to municipal systems (sewer, storm water, drinking water) were updated and upgraded to comply with modern-day codes. The new St. Francis Cabrini Apartments are now fully occupied. And the Archdiocese of New York has plans to convert several other buildings no longer in use into living spaces for the needy.
