This Project included the renovation and upgrade of an existing building which was built and used as a Harley-Davidson motorcycle dealership from the 1960s to roughly 2006 when the dealership moved. Since then the building was vacant and the renovation work included a new roof, new staircase, structural changes to create open space for classrooms and offices, upgrades to all existing systems (data/electrical, hvac, mechanical, plumbing, and sprinklers) as well as upgrades to municipal systems (sewer, storm water, and potable water) that connected to the building. A former freight elevator was reconfigured to meet ADA requirements as a public use elevator.
The intent was to retain the classic architectural exterior of the building that was an iconic landmark in the area to showcase El Centro as a first-class support organization for the community. The original open-space showroom retained the curved high ceilings and was turned into meeting and office space. The work spaces in the rear were combined into larger classrooms, learning areas, and space for community activities. In addition to a new roof, exterior work included a new entranceway, extensive glazing work on the exterior glass walls, landscaping and parking lot repaving.
El Centro is a non-profit, community-oriented organization that has helped those in need in the White Plains community since 1974. This new home will enable them to expand their programming and support more residents for many years to come.
